Office Wi-Fi keeps dropping? 7 common causes and how to fix them

Seven common reasons office Wi-Fi is slow or keeps disconnecting, from channel overlap to old access points, and practical fixes for each.

Unreliable Wi-Fi is one of the most common complaints we hear from growing offices. Video calls freeze, laptops disconnect, and people start using their phone hotspots. The cause is rarely the internet line itself. Here are the seven issues we find most often.

1. Consumer routers doing an office job

A single home router cannot handle forty people, their phones and a meeting room screen. Business access points are designed for many users, can be managed centrally, and hand devices over smoothly as people move around.

2. Access points in the wrong place

Access points hidden in a server room or above a metal ceiling grid lose much of their signal. Mount them on the ceiling, near where people actually sit, and away from thick walls, glass partitions and lift shafts.

3. Channel overlap with neighbours

In busy office buildings, dozens of networks compete for the same channels. A quick wireless survey shows which channels are crowded. Use the 5 GHz and 6 GHz bands for laptops where possible, keep 2.4 GHz for older devices, and avoid very wide channels in crowded spaces.

4. Too many networks broadcasting

Every extra network name adds background traffic. Most offices need only three: staff, guests and perhaps a separate network for printers and smart devices. Remove old test networks.

5. Old devices slowing everyone down

A few very old laptops or devices can drag down the performance of an access point for everyone connected to it. Keep firmware and Wi-Fi drivers updated, and plan to retire devices that only support old Wi-Fi standards.

6. Guest and staff traffic mixed together

Guests streaming video on the same network as your finance team is a performance problem and a security risk. Put guests on their own network with bandwidth limits and no access to internal systems.

7. Nobody watching the network

Problems are much easier to fix when you can see them. Cloud-managed Wi-Fi platforms show which clients struggle, which access point is overloaded and when the internet link itself is the bottleneck.

When to call for help

If your office has grown, moved floors, or added video-conferencing rooms since the Wi-Fi was installed, it is worth a proper review. We can survey your office, recommend placement and settings, and set up monitoring so issues are spotted before your team notices them.
